Vincent Janssen finally broke his Tottenham duck on Wednesday night – and fans took to Twitter to express their relief.
The summer signing from AZ Alkmaar is set for an extended run in the team after Harry Kane suffered ankle ligament damage last weekend that is likely to sideline him for around two months.
The striker, 22, spearheaded the attack against Gillingham in the EFL Cup as Mauricio Pochettino’s side won 5-0 to secure a smooth passage to the last-16 of the competition.
He scored Spurs’ third goal with a precise penalty after stand-in skipper Christian Eriksen generously allowed the Dutchman to take the spot-kick even though he was on a hat-trick after scoring the team’s first two goals.

It was the £18million man’s first goal for the club in what was his seventh appearance and Spurs fans were delighted that he had opened his account.
Janssen was given 75 minutes by Pochettino before he was replaced by youngster Marcus Edwards as the manager held the striker in reserve for the weekend.
Here is a selection of supporters’ messages on Twitter:
@ChrisEriksen8 Great thinking letting Janssen take the spot kick. Get him up and running…

Happy for Janssen, he needed that. Like I said I think he’s a talent but it’s unfair of Spurs fans to expect him to do what Hazza does.

As far as cup games go, tonight hasn’t been too bad for Spurs. First goals for Janssen and Onomah and a first glimpse of Nkoudou #COYS
