Reece Oxford has made the staggering claim that Marcus Edwards is the best footballer he has played with – and Tottenham fans have reacted with delight on Twitter.

Oxford has regularly rubbed shoulders with West Ham’s first team since bursting onto the scene last season.

The defender, 17, currently counts Dimitri Payet, Manuel Lanzini, Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio as teammates, but Tottenham wonderkid Edwards still rates as the top player he has ever featured alongside.

“I’ve said this before – Marcus Edwards. He’s probably one of the best players I’ve played with,” Oxford told Squawka, as quoted by the Evening Standard.

Oxford played with Edwards before being released from Tottenham’s youth academy and his fellow England youth international clearly made a lasting impression.

Spurs fans are getting used to the hype surrounding playmaker Edwards, who is also 17, after he was hailed as a potential great by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Oxford started the Hammers’ memorable 2015-16 opening day victory at Arsenal and has gone on to make a total of 14 senior appearances for Slaven Bilic’s side.

Edwards is also highly-rated at Spurs and made his debut for the senior side in the recent 5-0 League Cup victory over Gillingham.

Pochettino has likened the diminutive playmaker to Lionel Messi and has claimed he has the potential to become a “great” player.

Spurs fans could get another glimpse of Edwards in action against Liverpool in the League Cup later this month with Pochettino hinting he could name a youthful side for the trip to Anfield.
