Rio Ferdinand wound up Tottenham fans on Twitter by claiming on Thursday that Dele Alli is destined to move to a bigger club.
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day programme in the build-up to England’s 2-1 win over Wales, the former England defender claimed Alli is destined for “bigger and better things”.
Ferdinand made the assessment as he analysed the ability of the Spurs midfield sensation Dele Alli to make the right decisions.
While praising Alli, the ex-Manchester United, Leeds and West Ham centre-back also managed to criticise the north Londoners.
“This guy is destined for bigger and better things,” Ferdinand told Match of the Day. “No disrespect to Spurs, but I think he’s going to go on and play for a huge, huge, club.”
BBC host Gary Lineker subsequently stuck up for Spurs but the damage was already done as far as the club’s supporters were concerned.
Some defended the club, some praised Lineker for his defence and all Arsenal fans laughed. Here are some of the messages on Twitter:
In other Tottenham news, the club have been given an emphatic answer in a bid to land a £19.8million attacker.
