Tottenham fans have reacted with disappointment on Twitter after Eric Dier was only named on the bench to face Manchester City.
The 22-year-old has missed Spurs’ last two games against Middlesbrough and CSKA Moscow, after picking up a muscle injury during the North London’s side win against Sunderland in September.
However, the England international has recovered enough to earn a place on the bench after returning to training with Mauricio Pochettino’s side this week.
The former Sporting Lisbon star, who was one of England’s only players to return from Euro 2016 with any credit, could feature for Spurs as they look to close the gap on league leaders City.
Fans are relieved to see Dier return from injury, but many are disappointed not to see him start, as Victor Wanyama and Dele Alli start in centre midfield.
Here are a selection of Spurs’ fans tweets:
No Eric Dier – a bold move that. Sissoko could struggle to track Silva and Sterling.

No Dembele or Kane; Dier on bench. Maybe Poche should've started NKodou?

Not feeling too confident seeing that team. I'd have dier in instead of sissoko for starters

@SteveDay17 should be Dier instead of Sissoko. Massive danger of getting overrun in midfield

Dier has made the holding midfield position his own in the Tottenham side, despite originally starting in the North London’s side in defence at centre-back and right-back.
There’s more bad news for Spurs fans, as Moussa Dembele has failed to make the squad after also being withdrawn against Sunderland with injury.
In other Tottenham news, this is the confirmed line up to face City on Sunday.
