Hugo Lloris has revealed how he was left “embarrassed” when national team-mate Olivier Giroud claimed the Tottenham goalkeeper wanted to join Arsenal.
The Gunners striker claimed in February 2014 that his French colleague wanted to make the controversial move from Spurs to Emirates Stadium.
Lloris has explained how he felt humiliated at the thought of joining Spurs’ neighbours and bitter rivals.
“It was very embarrassing,” the goalkeeper told Mail Online. “Maybe he didn’t realise how big the impact would be.
“A little sentence now in football can have a big impact. I don’t really care what people think outside because I’m here every day. I’m very close to the chairman and the gaffer.”
Giroud made the claim during an interview in February 2014: “Have I asked him (Lloris) to join Arsenal?” he said. “Yes, I have with Lolo (Laurent Koscielny). He would have liked to, he would quite like to. You will have to ask him the question.”
France international Lloris put an end to speculation over his future in July 2014 by signing a five-year Spurs contract.
He was made captain a year later and has been an inspiration for the team this season in their unexpected title challenge.
Spurs drew 2-2 against Arsenal on Saturday and end the week five points adrift of Premier League leaders Leicester.
