Tottenham are leading the race to sign Fiorentina midfielder Milan Badelj, according to a report.

The Sun claim that that Spurs have identified Badelj as their first possible signing of the January transfer window.

It is said that Tottenham are ahead of AC Milan in the battle for the services of the 27-year-old, who has faced Spurs four times in the last two seasons of the Europa League.

The Serie A star has just shy of two years to run on his current deal at the club, which which expires in June 2018.

Fiorentina may therefore be willing to cash in on £7million-rated Badelj before his value is driven down by the passage of time.

The defensive midfielder had just one club goal to his name in his previous two seasons, but has already got off the mark in his six matches this season, with the winning goal in a 1-0 victory for Fiorentina.

Badelj has made 24 appearances for his national side and was a part of Croatia’s Euro 2016 squad.

Spurs’ reported interest in the player comes as they work on tying virtually all of their key players down to improved, long-term contracts.

Senior stars Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen have all signed new deals in the last fortnight, as have fringe duo Tom Carroll and Harry Winks.

In other Tottenham transfer news, this Spurs senior man is in talks for a move to France.
