Carlo Ancelotti thinks Eric Dier has been one of the best players in Euro 2016 despite England’s humiliating defeat to Iceland in the last-16.

The Tottenham midfielder was hauled off at half-time against the minnows with England losing 2-1, but Ancelotti has insisted Dier has done himself proud.

Dier will return to White Hart Lane hoping to put his first taste of a major tournament with England firmly behind him and Ancelotti thinks the future for the Three Lions and Spurs is bright.

“I like these young players that Roy Hodgson picked. I think Eric Dier has been one of the best players in the tournament,” said Ancelotti writing in the Telegraph.

“Dele Alli will be playing Champions League football next season and he will be one of the best young players in the competition.

“I like Daniel Sturridge, whom I know from Chelsea, and I like Jamie Vardy and Raheem Sterling.

“All of those players are young apart from Vardy, and he is new to international football. On Monday they were faced with a crisis and they did not know how to react.”

Tottenham will be eager to mount a second title charge after pushing Leicester for the Premier League trophy right up until the final weeks of the season.

Dier was one of the stand-out players in the 2015-16 season in the top flight and will play in the Champions League for the first time with Tottenham in the coming months.

England on the other hand must now appoint a new manager after the swift resignation of Roy Hodgson as they look to move on from possibly the most embarrassing defeat in their history.

In other Tottenham news, Dier’s dismal performance against Iceland could be down to the fact the midfielder was fighting a fever during the game.
