Paul Merson believes Eric Dier is the best English holding midfielder in the Premier League ahead of the country’s friendly with Germany on Saturday.
Dier has been a mainstay in the Tottenham midfield with 44 appearances in all competitions this season and Merson places him ahead of a host of more experienced internationals when asked to select a team to start against Germany.
England travel to face the reigning world champions in Berlin with a squad laden down with the stars of Tottenham’s title tilt.
Dier joins Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker in the England camp and Merson believes the defensive midfielder is by far England’s best option.
“This may surprise a few people, but for me, Eric Dier is the best English holding midfield player in the country,” said Merson when asked by Sky Sports to pick his starting eleven against Germany. “He is very disciplined and makes simple passes.
“He wins the ball and gives it to someone else without looking to spray a 40-yard pass.”
Merson picked four of the five Tottenham players in his eleven – with only full-back Walker missing out – and has urged Roy Hodgson to put his faith in the young Spurs contingent.
Tottenham have certainly done that this season with their three best players, Kane, Alli and Dier, all under the age of 23.
Spurs are just five points behind league leaders Leicester and are hoping that they can chase down the Foxes with seven games left to play.
In other Tottenham news, one Spurs star has insisted that they are not worried about Leicester.
