There’s a mutual respect to be had between former Southampton team-mates Victor Wanyama and Toby Alderweireld as they look to reunite again next season at Tottenham.
The tough-tackling midfielder recently switched from the south coast to north London for an £11million fee where he played alongside the star centre-back during the Belgian’s season long-loan in the 2014-15 season.
The duo have not yet been reunited in person with Alderweireld having been a part of Belgium’s Euro 2016 campaign, which came to an end on Friday evening in a 3-1 loss against Wales.
However, both players have been quick to state how they believe one another can be effective in unison for the White Hart Lane club during the 2016-17 season.
“I know Toby, I’ve played with him before and he’s really a good player and also a good guy off the pitch,” said Wanyama to the official club website.
“It’s obviously important for the team to have a player like Toby. He’s intelligent and he’s always ahead of the opponents so it’s really good to have a player like him in the side and I’m delighted to link up with him again.
“We have a good relationship too. We are always talking on the field and I enjoy it a lot when I play in the same team as Toby.”
The former Atletico Madrid defender reiterated Wanyama’s comments towards the Kenyan while away with the Belgium team.
“Obviously I played with him at Southampton and I think he’s one of the best midfielder players in the Premier League,” said the 27-year-old.
“He’s strong, he can play with the ball and mentally he’s very strong too. He likes to work hard and that’s perfect for the team that we are building now.”
Spurs have qualified for next season’s Champions League campaign for the first time in five years and the pair have experience of featuring 27 times within the competition between them.
The north London club will also be wanting to improve on last season’s domestic league campaign where they finished in third place and the two Premier League stars go into the new season with 125 top-flight appearances between them, which include 26 encounters together.
