PREVIEW By London correspondent Tony Hughes

Tottenham will anxiously wait to see if Toby Alderweireld is fully recovered before naming their side for Saturday’s Premier League clash at Liverpool.

The Belgium international missed his country’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal on Tuesday after suffering gastroenteritis during the international break.

Alderweireld has not only had an outstanding debut season at White Hart Lane but has also played every minute of every game of Spurs’ 31-match league campaign.

With Jan Vertonghen working his way back from knee ligament damage and emerging star Cameron Carter-Vickers not expected to play again this season, manager Mauricio Pochettino will be especially keen that Alderweireld will have fully recovered from his stomach condition.

Should the Belgian miss out, Pochettino would drop Dier back to central defence and be forced into reconfiguring his midfield, with Ryan Mason most likely promoted to the starting X1.

However, the silk and steel combination of Dier and Mousa Dembele has been so key to the team’s rise to second in the Premier League that Pochettino will be loathe to break it up.

In the more advanced areas, Erik Lamela, Heung-Min Son and Nacer Chadli are fighting for one place on the flanks.

Tottenham: Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Rose; Dembele, Dier; Lamela, Alli, Eriksen, Kane.
