Toby Alderweireld faces a race against time to be fit for Tottenham’s Premier League showdown against Liverpool.

The Spurs defender has given his club a major scare after being ruled out of Belgium’s friendly with Portugal on Tuesday due to illness.

Alderweireld has been suffering with the serious stomach condition gastroenteritis and has not travelled with the squad to Leiria.

Football Insider revealed on Monday evening that the centre-back was expected to pull out of the Belgium team in a major scare for Spurs ahead of Saturday’s Premier League visit to Anfield.

White Hart Lane boss Mauricio Pochettino now faces an anxious wait to see if Alderweireld recovers in time for the weekend.

Alderweireld has had an outstanding season for Spurs following his £11.5million transfer from Atletico Madrid last summer.

He has played every minute of every Premier League match for the second-placed team, forming a fine partnership with countryman Jan Vertonghen before his knee injury, and latterly Kevin Wimmer.

Spurs travel to Anfield on Saturday aiming to keep the pressure on league leaders Leicester, who have a five-point lead over Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Belgium take on Portugal on Tuesday night in a match that was originally scheduled for Brussels and was then re-arranged due to terrorist attacks.

In other Tottenham news, the high-flying Londoners are close to clinching a £41million double deal.
