Tottenham should target Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez to add depth in defence and stamp their intentions of winning the Premier league and becoming Champions League regulars.

The 21-year-old centre-back would be the perfect back-up and provide competition for Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

The Daily Mail claimed that Arsenal were in talks with Ateltico over a move last summer, but their £40m valuation was a stumbling block.

However, Gimenez hasn’t had a regular start this season and was injured for two months. He’s sat out Atletico’s last two games and his valuation could have tumbled.

Tottenham’s Alderweireld was injured for two months this season and although Eric Dier stepped in to cover, Tottenham’s results showed that they missed someone as adept at centre-back as the Belgian international.

This highlighted Spurs need for stronger defensive options if they wish to challenge for the Premier League and compete in Europe.

Kevin Wimmer is another potential option but Pochettino looks reluctant to use him and he doesn’t quite seem up to the standard of the English top flight.

Gimenez has Champions League experience and his Spanish roots would suit him well working alongside Argentine manager Pochettino.

He’s a ball-playing centre-back, which is a quality Tottenham fans like about Alderweireld and he is just as composed when under pressure, showing maturity in defence.

Gimenez has already shown great progression but he could learn a lot from Alderweireld and Vertonghen and Pochettino is known for his ability to work with youth players.

His contract currently runs out in 2018 but he has made just seven appearances for Madrid so far this season.

It would be a tough task to convince him to make a move to a club that won’t guarantee him first-team football, but what a coup it would be for Spurs and Pochettino if the club was successful.

In other Tottenham news, this player will earn £20,000 more than Harry Kane at the club.
