Tottenham are prepared to make Harry Kane the club’s top earner to keep him out of the clutches of Manchester United, Football Insider sources understand.
Kane is in line for his third new deal inside a year following his remarkable progress last season.
With talks scheduled to take place this summer, Spurs are ready to offer the striker a contract worth more than £100,000-a-week.
The London club’s current top earner is believed to be Emmanuel Adebayor, who has one year remaining on a deal worth around £110,000-a-week, although the Togo international could leave White Hart Lane before the start of next season.
Even if Tottenham cannot offload Adebayor, Kane will receive a huge salary increase that reflects his elevated status at the club.
The youth-team graduate, 21, signed a contract last summer, before penning a new £35,000-a-week, five-and-a-half-year deal in early February.
Football Insider has learned that he is now set for his third pay rise in less than 12 months as reward for a campaign in which he scored 31 goals for Tottenham as well as starting his international career in stunning fashion by netting 79 seconds into his first England appearance.
White Hart Lane chiefs are adamant that their talisman will not be sold to United or any other Premier League club this summer.
This was echoed by comments from Kane in the aftermath of England Under-21s’ 1-0 defeat to Portugal at the European Championship finals.
“I am looking forward to the future with Spurs,” he told reporters. “I’ve seen there’s interest but that’s all I know. It is flattering. Tottenham are a big club. And that is the way people have to see it. I am at a big club now, I am enjoying my football and that is the way I am looking forward to next season.”
But chairman Daniel Levy recognises that the interest from Old Trafford is genuine and knows that Kane needs to be brought into the top bracket of Tottenham earners.
