Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Tottenham sensation Marcus Edwards could make his senior debut on Wednesday night.
Edwards was one of two goalscorers on Monday night as Spurs Under-23s slipped to a 6-2 defeat by Liverpool, as well as winning the penalty for teammate Ryan Loft to convert.
The playmaker has impressed for the development side this season after agreeing a new contract with the club in the summer.
Speaking ton Tuesday, Pochettino revealed that the attacking midfielder could make his senior Tottenham bow against League One side Gillingham on Wednesday.
“Marcus Edwards could maybe in the squad tomorrow,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Hertfordshire Mercury. “He could have the chance to play.”
Edwards has not always seen eye to eye with the North London club, after rejecting a number of offers last season to sign a new contract.
However, Spurs’ number 48 signed a new deal during pre-season and Pochettino is willing to fast-track the highly rated youngster into the first team.
Elsewhere, midfield duo Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele are to be assessed before Spurs welcome Justin Edinburgh’s side to White Hart Lane tomorrow night. Star striker Harry Kane will definitely not be available, after leaving Sunday’s 1-0 win against Sunderland on crutches.
A place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup is up for grabs, as Tottenham look to generate some momentum against the Gills.
Gillingham are on a disappointing run of form in League One, with just one win in six games succumbing the side to 13th place despite a strong start. Spurs will be looking to put behind them their recent cup disappointment, after losing to Monaco 2-1 in the Champions League.
