Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote’s move to Turkish giants Galatasaray is in doubt after the 30-year-old has failed a medical, according to a report.
The Ivory Coast international had agreed a move to the SuperLig side, but it now seems Jan Olde Riekerink’s side could pull the plug on a transfer for the combative midfielder.
Turkish sports newspaper AMK have reported that a problem in Tiote’s left lateral meniscus could potentially scupper a move, and Gala could look to sign Lassana Diarra if the deal does end up falling through.
It will come as a blow to the midfielder, who was spotted in Istanbul airport on Sunday. The former FC Twente star has yet to feature for the Magpies this season.
Tiote has also been rumoured with moves to China and the United Arab Emirates this summer, as he looks to leave Newcastle before the transfer deadline on Wednesday.
Tiote has just 12 months remaining on his St. James’ Park deal, after signing with the north-east outfit in 2010 for £3.5million.
Fans still hold Tiote in their hearts following an impressive six-year stint with the Toon, with many recalling his finest moment in a Newcastle shirt that saw him score a screamer against Arsenal to earn a 4-4 draw.
Tiote has made over 150 appearances for the club, but struggled for consistency and fitness since sustaining a serious knee injury in February 2015.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are in talks to sign this Premier League winger.
