Twitter reacted amusingly when former Everton defender John Stones had a half to forget after producing an awful mistake for Manchester City against Southampton.
The £50million summer signing could not have had a worse 45 minutes as his miss-timed backpass led to the Saints taking the lead in the first half.
Stones played Claudio Bravo short as he attempted to keep possession in Manchester City’s defensive third but Nathan Redmond was on hand to take advantage of his mistake.
Just moments later, the former Toffees centre-back thought he’d grabbed the equaliser for City only for his goal to be called offside.
The 22-year-old has had an up and down start to life under Pep Guardiola since leaving the Blues in the summer but has started seven league games this season.
Stones has featured heavily and has displayed in glimpses the potential which caught the eye of the City transfer committee.
However, the England international’s inconsistent performances seem to have continued despite a move away from Goodison Park and Sunday lunchtime’s encounter was another game to forget for the youngster.
Alongside Vincent Kompany, Stones looked out of sorts and uncomfortable and City will be hoping he picks up form soon as Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool all continue to mount pressure at the top of the table.
Here is a selection of some of the best messages on Twitter:

" Stones" has always, ALWAYS had a mistake in him. Always will. The fact he's young, can dribble it out, don't make him another Ferdinand!
