Liverpool have lost 4-0 to Mainz less than 24 hours after beating Barcelona 4-0 – prompting a wave of amusing Twitter posts.
The mighty Barcelona, who included Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano in their starting XI, were comprehensively dispatched by a virtual full-strength Liverpool team at Wembley on Saturday.
Less than 24 hours later, a largely second string Liverpool team were humbled by the Bundesliga outfit, who were managed by Jurgen Klopp for seven years.
In the Barcelona game, which was held at Wembley, Sadio Mane opened the scoring with a tidy finish before a Mascherano own goal, Divock Origi strike and Marko Grujic wonder header saw them demolish the European giants.
The Mainz match was almost entirely contrasting, with little for Liverpool fans to smile about and they were suitably goaded by their rivals on Twitter.
