Wayne Rooney will reportedly be dropped from England’s starting line-up against Slovenia on Tuesday-  and Twitter reacted strongly to the news that Jordan Henderson is expected to be named captain.

The Liverpool midfielder could take the armband off his Manchester United rival and there was strong reaction from Reds’ fans on social media.

Gareth Southgate’s side defeated Malta 2-0 on Saturday in a comfortable victory but Rooney was booed by some of the 81,000 fans watching at Wembley.

The Manchester United captain has been heavily criticised for his England performances recently and Sky Sports reported on their website Monday he has been omitted from the team that faces Slovenia.

England’s most-capped player featured alongside Henderson in a deep-lying midfield role on Saturday.

However, it could be Liverpool’s captain that leads the team out on Tuesday night and it’s an even more controversial choice.

Henderson has made 26 appearances for the Three Lions but is less experienced than Jack Wilshere, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and Joe Hart.

Here’s how the news of Henderson’s potential captaincy went down on Twitter with Liverpool fans on Monday afternoon:

In other Liverpool news, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino’s chemistry off the pitch has led to success on it.
