Germany brushed aside Slovakia with a convincing 3-0 win to saunter into the Euro 2016 quarter-finals – but Twitter was distinctly unimpressed with Mesut Özil’s 13th minute penalty in the game.

The World Cup holders were 1-0 up when Ozil was handed a golden chance to double the advantage but his spot-kick was neither powerfully hit or headed for the corner, and it was comfortably saved by the Slovakia goalkeeper..

Ozil has been in fine form for his country during the summer tournament after being Arsenal’s outstanding player in the 2015-16 domestic season.

The creative midfielder has a well established reputation for his vision, passing range and ability to create goals, and also for his extensive Arsenal fan base on social media.

Tottenham fans predictably took delight in the playmaker’s penalty howler and stuck the boot in on Twitter. Here are some of the messages:

It remains to be seen how far Germany can go in this summers European Championships but they will face a challenge in the Quarter-Final, where either Spain or Italy will await them.

One thing we do know is that if it goes all the way to penalties, one particular German will be at the back of the queue.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs may have a battle on their hands to keep Eric Dier as Bayern Munich make backgroound checks on the England star.
