Guillermo Varela is on standby to complete a deadline day loan move to Genoa, Football Insider sources understand.
The Italian club are in talks with Manchester United about signing the full-back on loan for the rest of the season with the option of a permanent move in the summer.
A United source has told Football Insider that the deal is in place and the club are waiting for manager Louis van Gaal to given it the green light.
In turn, Van Gaal is waiting on the fitness of Matteo Darmian ahead of the team’s Premier League clash against Stoke on Tuesday night before allowing Varela to leave.
The Dutchman will pull the plug on the loan if there are any doubts about the fitness of his injury-plagued senior defenders.
Varela, 22, played the full 90 minutes of Friday’s 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Derby after stepping in for the injured Darmian.
The Italian missed the Derby clash with a head injury but Van Gaal said on Thursday the Italian should return for the Stoke match.
The Premier League club have been beset by a series of injuries to their senior full-backs, with Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Ashley Young all long-term absentees.
Uruguayan Varela, who is principally a right-back, was the first signing made by former manager David Moyes and spent last season on loan at Real Madrid’s B team Castilla.
He returned to Old Trafford this season and has made four senior appearances, in the Champions League defeat by Wolfsburg and against West Ham, Bournemouth and Derby.
In other Manchester United transfer news, the club are in talks with Hull about a loan for Nick Powell.
