Jan Vertonghen has claimed Tottenham have the best squad in the Premier League ahead of their next clash against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The 29-year-old made the comments after his side were questioned for their ability to compete after losing key players Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld to injuries this season.

The duo were sorely missed during Tottenham’s 0-0 Champions League draw against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday evening, while Kyle Walker was also absent.

Hugo Lloris, who was Spurs’ hero during the midweek clash, missed the start of the season due to a hamstring injury and Tottenham have also been without Mousa Dembele regularly as he struggles to retain full fitness following a series of niggling injuries.

Vertonghen has claimed Spurs’ squad is just as good as any in the Premier League.

“We’ve shown it again. [reaction to criticism] It started with Harry and people said it about Hugo [that Tottenham would struggle without them,],” Vertonghen said, as reported by The Guardian.

“There is strength to this team, especially after this window, when some great players came in. We can miss almost everyone, although obviously not eight or nine players.

“The squad is so strong and we showed that against Leverkusen in a performance without Toby [Alderweireld] and without Kyle [Walker.]

“I think we have as strong a squad as any in the Premier League. Some other teams have exceptional talents but we have them as well. It’s a sign that we can miss everyone almost. It shows the strength of the team.”

Tottenham currently sit in third position in the Premier League and remain unbeaten after their first eight league games.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side kept another clean sheet on Tuesday evening, their seventh of the season despite Alderweireld’s absence.

They have also scored 13 goals in the league since the start of the 2016-17 campaign and Kane has been absent since mid-September.
