Ander Herrera has claimed that Wayne Rooney is the greatest player England have ever produced.

The Spanish midfielder and Rooney both scored in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory at Goodison Park against Everton last Saturday.

Rooney’s goal was his first away from home in 11 months and places him joint-second in the Premier League’s all-time top scorers behind only Alan Shearer.

And Herrera took the opportunity to express exactly how highly he rates his captain.

“Wayne is our leader. He is the best English player in English history and we are lucky to have him.”

Rooney surpassed Sir Booby Charlton’s England scoring record in September and Herrera believes that United’s talisman has silenced his recent critics.

“When he fights like he did we can be very proud of him.”

With 253 goals in 568 appearances in a United shirt, Herrera has warned that United must continue to follow Rooney’s example if they are to compete at the highest level.

“If we want to be champions then this is not enough, we have to keep on playing like this. Now we have to play against Man City in the Premier League and if we want to be the champions then we have to keep playing like this.”
