Arsenal can be inspired to beat Barcelona by drawing on the memories of their Champions League group stage win over Bayern Munich, Arsene Wenger has claimed.
The Gunners have been pitted to play the European champions in the last-16 of the Champions League when the competition restarts in February.
Speaking for the first time about the tie at his media conference on Thursday morning, Wenger is convinced that his team can eliminate Barcelona.
“We have to be inspired by the Bayern result at home,” Wenger said. “It’s difficult but very exciting as well. They are the best team in Europe but we have a chance to knock them out.”
Arsenal have been knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage in each of the previous five seasons, including at the hands of Barcelona and Bayern.
But Wenger’s side defeated Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Bundesliga champions at Emirates Stadium in the group stage of this season’s competition.
Goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil helped Arsenal to an against-the-odds 2-0 win in late October, although Bayern went on to convincingly win the return match 5-1 a fortnight later at the Allianz Arena.
