Arsene Wenger hailed an “exceptional” debut by new signing Mohamed Elneny after Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Burnley.

The Londoners maintained their remarkable cup record against lower league opposition with a fourth-round victory that keeps them on course for a third consecutive FA Cup triumph.

Elneny made his first appearance for the Gunners since his £5million move from Basle earlier this month, starting in central midfield alongside fit-again Francis Coquelin.

The Egypt international played the full 90 minutes and Wenger was impressed with his debut.

Speaking at his post-match media conference, Wenger said of Elneny: “I felt he started a bit cautious, played a bit secure. He became more adventurous, he had some good shots on goal.

“His mobility, his work rate was exceptional and for the rest, he needs to adjust to the power of the game in the Premier League. This was a good welcome today and certainly he has learnt a lot today.

“It will take him some time to adjust to the power side of our game here, but the intelligence, the mobility and the technical level are good.”

Goals from Calum Chambers and Alexis Sanchez were enough to secure Arsenal’s progress to the FA Cup fifth round.
