West Ham are close to clinching the signing of an emerging English striker, according to a report.

The Hammers have made clear their ambitions to spend big on attacking talent in the forthcoming transfer window.

Now a columnist called the Insider has claimed on the official West Ham website that the club have a new forward signing lined up.

It is said that one of the most promising young forwards in English football is set to undergo a medical with the club.

It has been widely reported in recent days that West Ham are favourites to sign striker Ashley Fletcher from Manchester United but there has been no confirmation of a deal.

The Daily Mail report that the Londoners have killed competition for his signature by offering the 20-year-old a four-year contract.

“The hard work is continuing behind the scenes as the Club look to bring in more new players,” wrote the Insider.

“My sources have confirmed to me that one of the most promising young strikers in England is set to undergo a medical with the club and a deal could be finalised in the near future.”

Fletcher spent the second half of the 2015-16 season on loan with Barnsley where his goal in the League One play-off final helped secure the club’s promotion into the Championship.

United have offered the youngster a new deal but he has rejected it in favour of regular first-team football.

West Ham are ready to smash their club record transfer fee this summer of £15.5million, which was spent to entice Andy Carroll from Liverpool in the summer of 2013.

Carroll is comfortably the Hammers’ record signing, although the club have also spent £10million-plus fees on the likes of Payet, Enner Valencia and Angel Ogbonna.

In other West Ham transfer news, teen sensation Reece Oxford is increasingly likely to leave the club this summer.
