Ian Wright spoke in glowing terms of the new midfield partnership of Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin after Arsenal blew Everton apart on Saturday.
Goals from Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi helped the Gunners get their Premier League title bid back on track with a convincing 2-0 triumph at Goodison Park.
The attacking duo will capture the headlines with their superbly-taken strikes but Arsenal legend Wright was really impressed by the midfield duo, who were starting a match together for just the third time.
Elneny delivered another polished display in what was his fifth consecutive start, while Coquelin set a Premier League high for the season when he made 12 interceptions in the match, more than any other player in a single game in this campaign.
Speaking to BT Sport afterwards, Wright said: “Elneny and Coquelin just in front of the defence were very solid. I liked the partnership. It seems Elneny has got the licence to drift and go forward, and it’s nice to see an Arsenal midfielder taking shots from outside the box.
“Coquelin stays back and keeps it solid. As much as Everton couldn’t get through, it was down to them two as well.”
Elneny and Coquelin have been given the opportunity to blossom following the serious injuries sustained by Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey.
In other Arsenal news, Arsene Wenger gave an update on the fitness of Cazorla, Wilshere, Ramsey and Petr Cech.
