Xabi Alonso has described Liverpool’s upcoming match against Manchester United on Monday as a game that is “going to be a good one to watch”.
The now 34-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder played for the Reds for five years between 2004 and 2009 and was involved in a number of matches between the two famous rivals.
He has described the clash as one that “anyone can win”, but has suggested that his former side might be the favourites heading into the encounter at Anfield.
“These kinds of games, anyone can win,” said Alonso to the Liverpool website. “Maybe Liverpool are in a better position and maybe favourites, but it doesn’t matter.
“United still have great players and a good team. This game is so important for them because they don’t want the gap to be bigger. It’s going to be a good one to watch.”
Liverpool are currently sat in fourth place in the Premier League table with 16 points from their first seven league fixtures.
They sit three points ahead of their rivals United, who are placed in seventh.
The Reds will be keen to continue their five-match winning run against their most hated competitors, while the Red Devils will be looking to improve from their 1-1 draw against Stoke in their last fixture.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds are preparing to beat Arsenal to the signing of Torino forward Andrea Belotti.
