Aston Villa’s Twitter-friendly chairman Tony Xia has revealed that the club has agreed to allow defender Joe Bennett to join Cardiff on a free transfer.

The defender, who joined Aston Villa for £2.75million in 2012 will now head to their Championship counterparts for nothing, according to the outspoken chairman.

“We have agreed to let Joe move to Cardiff for free but not subside any wages,” said Xia on his personal Twitter account.

The revelation follows Xia replying to a fan on Thursday that he wouldn’t pay for the 26-year-old to play for another club.

The Birmingham Mail also reported in August that the Chinese businessman had pulled the plug on the 26-year-old full-back’s move to Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The return of left-back Jordan Amavi, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear last season as well as Aly Cissokho has pushed Bennett, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Hillsborough down the pecking order.

The full-back was entering the final year of his contract at Villa Park after making just 38 appearances for the club during his four-year stay.

Bennett played in just one Capital One Cup match for the Midlands side last season in which the club suffered relegation to the Championship, as the defender had an unsuccessful loan spell at Bournemouth as well as Wednesday.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, young defender Kevin Toner  has signed a new two-year contract before moving to League One side Walsall on loan.
