What a statement of intent the signing of Arfield will be when he is finally confirmed as a Rangers player today.
As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers have finalised terms with the midfielder and he will be paraded as the first signing of the Steven Gerrard era.
Intriguingly, the Glasgow giants have broken the bank to land Arfield, 29, ahead of a number of clubs and will pay him in excess of £25,000 a week.
That is mega money by Rangers’ standards, with the pay packet far in excess of the current players at the club and, indeed, Football Insider has learned the Canada international will become the best-paid player in Scotland on a better deal even that Celtic’s top stars such as Scott Brown.
It has certainly helped Arfield that he will arrive from Burnley on a free transfer, as his contract at the Premier League club expires next month.
A left footer, Arfield can play either in central midfield or on the left flank, and he will bring class and bite to a midfield that is in need of reinforcing after once again falling short in the marquee matches this season.
He has been a key player for Sean Dyche’s side as they have established themselves in the English top flight, with only Ashley Barnes (99) and Ben Mee (96) accumulating more than the former Falkirk man’s 86 top-flight appearances for Burnley.
He also knows Scottish football inside out, which will prove handy in the maelstrom of the Old Firm as well as the SPL marathon. Good work, Rangers. Some very smart pre-window work.
