£20million Liverpool midfield flop wanted by Portuguese giants - report

By Alex Taylor

Sporting Lisbon are preparing a bid for Liverpool flop Lazar Markovic, according to reports.

Portuguese publication Record claim that the £20million midfielder could find himself at his third club in three years this summer having failed to nail down a starting place in Merseyside.

The report says that Sporting boss Jorge Jesus has had ‘limited contact’ with the 22-year-old about the deal, but that the player may leave before the start of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.

Liverpool signed Markovic from Benfica for £20million in 2014, but he had a mixed debut campaign at Anfield and was sent out on loan to gain further first-team experience.

The former Partizan star scored just two goal and provided three assists in 21 appearances for Fenerbahce last season in.

The youngster did not have the opportunity to make full use of his loan period after an injury ruled him out of almost the entirety of the second half of the season.

The player has now rejoined the Liverpool squad as they begin pre-season training under Jurgen Klopp for the first time.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds have put Christian Benteke’s summer move to Crystal Palace in jeopardy after refusing to budge on their asking price of £32.5million.
