Why this 22-year-old Manchester United attacker should replace Mkhitaryan v Palace

COMMENT By Will Butcher

Memphis Depay should be given a chance to showcase his talent as Manchester United face Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old could be given a chance by Jose Mourinho, after Henrikh Mkhitaryan was ruled out until Boxing Day with an ankle injury after being stretchered off against Tottenham.

With Mkhitaryan ruled out, Holland international should be given a chance against Alan Pardew’s struggling Palace and here are three reasons why:

Palace’s left-back problems

With Pape Souare currently out injured after breaking his leg in a car crash earlier this season, Martin Kelly has deputised at left-back.

But the former Liverpool man is right-footed, and more recognised at right-back or in the middle of the defence.

Former PSV Eindhoven star Depay could terrorise the one-time England international with his dazzling footwork and electric pace.

Counter attack

Away at a feisty atmosphere like Selhurst Park, United must look to exploit the counter attack and reign down on Palace’s goal with plenty of pace.

Depay provides that as he could link up with France international Anthony Martial who would also provide an abundance of speed on the opposite flank.

If Mourinho looks to use pace in his attack on Wednesday night, then United should secure their seventh league win of the season.

Unpredictability

Palace boss Pardew is likely to be expecting Juan Mata or Marcus Rahsford to replace former Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the flank.

However, playing Depay could catch Pardew and the Palace defence by surprise. Causing confusion at the back, United’s number seven could provide the difference and three points.

If Palace do not do their homework on the bit-part United winger, then they could come to rue their pre-match preparations.
