Leicester forward Kelechi Iheanacho wants to quit the King Power Stadium and Newcastle United are ready to offer him a chance of first-team football for the rest of the season, according to a report.
TeamTalk claims that Iheanacho, 21, has asked to leave the Foxes on loan and the Magpies have become one of the leading contenders to snap him up before Wednesday night’s transfer deadline, despite interest across Europe.
Iheanacho, who signed for the 2015/16 Premier League champions in the summer for £25million from Manchester City, has made just two starts in England’s top-flight and it is understood that manager Claude Puel has given the green light for the Nigeria international to make a loan move away from the King Power.
The report adds that Newcastle will make a move for Iheanacho if they miss out of Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgsensen, who is said to be their number one target after widespread reports of a £15million bid being rejected.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle may be able to offer more than the £15million that Feyenoord have turned down for Jorgensen, but it is very unlikely they will come close to matching the £25million that Leicester spent on Iheanacho in the summer, so a loan deal seems to be the only viable option. The Nigeria international appears to have hit a brick wall in his career after what was a stunning start to Premier League life at Man City. He seemed to score with every shot on target, but now, he is not even getting in the first-team at Leicester. Iheanacho is a cut above every striker at St James’ Park and would be an excellent short-term signing. It would be better to go after him on a six-month loan as he is proven in England, than Jorgensen, who would be a big waste of money if he flopped on Tyneside.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are in the hunt to sign this £6million-rated forward who has been tipped for stardom by Frank Lampard.
