Watch: New Liverpool sensation reveals his targets for next season

By Alex Taylor

New Liverpool signing Loris Karius has released a message for the clubs fans following his £4.7million transfer from Mainz on Tuesday.

In a short video that was posted to Twitter by Liverpool, Karius spoke of his excitement at joining the Merseyside outfit.

It is the first time Liverpool fans have heard directly from their new goalkeeper and the former Manchester City academy player seems excited to get going.

“I’m really proud to be at this club and I am looking forward to playing for the fans, I can’t wait,” the 22-year-old German said.

The move represents Jurgen Klopp’s first signing of the summer as Liverpool will look to complete most of their business before the start of the European Championships on 10 June.

The 22-year-old will attempt to edge ahead of Liverpool’s current first-choice goal keeper Simon Mignolet who himself signed a five year deal midway through last season.

Liverpool’s new keeper kept nine clean sheets in 34 league games in his last season for Klopp’s former club Mainz and despite facing issues with his long-range kicking he has improved dramatically over the last 12 months.

Having played second fiddle to Marc-Andre ter Stegen for much of his international youth career, Karius will be targeting a regular starting role.

Mignolet has been widely criticised for a series of high-profile errors and faces genuine competition to keep his first-team spot.
