COMMENT

Everton have assembled an extremely expensive squad over the last few seasons, but results have shown this term that there are too many of them that are simply not good enough.

Ronald Koeman splashed an insane amount of money in the summer which only resulted in the Toffee side taking a step backwards in their progression.

However with Sam Allardyce now on board, Everton must start looking towards their January business with both players that they must sign, and players that they must sell.

Too many members of the current squad at Goodison Park have cost too much money for the results that they have provided and Allardyce must now oversee a brutal exodus of these underperforming, expensive stars when the transfer window re-opens in just a few weeks' time.

By offloading these players, Everton should have a lot more money in the bank and a much more streamlined squad ahead of the second half of the season which will not contain any European football after their Europa League disaster.

James McCarthy

In 2013, McCarthy became Everton's second most expensive player when he arrived from Wigan for a whopping £13million.

Over four years later, the Republic of Ireland international is showing signs that he simply isn't the player that he once was and is the first name that Allardyce should consider offloading in what will be a brutal January transfer window for the Goodison Park fringe players.

McCarthy, 27, has not long returned from a serious knee injury but has still made just one appearance this season.

The midfielder is nowhere near the Everton first-team and to get him off the wage bill would be a good first move by Allardyce, who has other areas of the squad to strengthen.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Schneiderlin only joined Everton from Southampton in January, but for his fee of up to £24million, he simply hasn't shown that he has been worth the insane price-tag.

The 28-year-old enforcer was brilliant on the south coast with Southampton and showed in his first few outings on Merseyside that he could be a good player.

However the Frenchman's form has fell off a cliff and this season he has been one of the worst players at the club.

In 18 appearances across all competitions the only thing he has done of note is get himself sent off twice.

Schneiderlin is more of a liability than anything else and there are other players in the Everton squad that are showing better form that he is right now.

Davy Klaassen

This could be a very harsh one but Klaassen has done absolutely nothing since joining Everton in the summer for a stunning £23million from Dutch titans Ajax.

The Netherlands international was brilliant in Amsterdam but is yet another Eredivisie import to the Premier League that has failed to meet the level required.

Klaassen, 24, has not played in the league since September and has been completely left out of the matchday squad for the last six fixtures in the competition.

There's no way that Allardyce and Everton can be affording to keep someone as expensive as Klaassen out of the squad and they should cash in on him as soon as possible to ensure that his value doesn't plummet too drastically.
