Celtic could have an all new centre-back partnership next season, if reports are to be believed.
The Hoops have been linked with Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba, according to a report in the Newcastle Chronicle.
The 6ft-tall 23-year-old has been a bit-part player for the Premier League side, and he could well be the replacement for Dedryck Boyata, should the Hoops decide to cash in on the Belgian who only has 12 months left on his contract.
If Mbemba does sign for the Hoops, he could be part of a new look centre-back partnership alongside 19-year-old Kristoffer Ajer, who wasn’t even in the first-team in December.
The first choice defenders for the Bhoys at the start of last season were Boyata and Jozo Simunovic, but whilst Boyata is still a part of the first-team Simunovic is now a squad player at best.
Even if 27-year-old Boyata doesn’t leave in the summer, it does seem likely that Simunovic will be the defender to depart, and if the Hoops are to sell a defender in the summer, then they will have to bring in a replacement.
With Marvin Compper rarely featuring and Jack Hendry still to convince, the Hoops need to bring in a commanding centre-back, and Mbemba could be the man, and his partnership with Ajer seems to be what would be favoured by Brendan Rodgers.
In other Celtic news, it seems likely that at least one striker will leave the Hoops in the summer
