Sky pundit: This is what I expect Klopp to achieve at Liverpool this season

Neil Mellor has claimed Liverpool should be aiming to win the League Cup this season and make up for the disappointment of losing in last year’s final.

The Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool striker told the club’s official TV channel he expects Klopp to win the League Cup and clinch his first trophy on Merseyside.

“I think this competition is very important for Liverpool this season because they are not competing in Europe,” Mellor told LFCTV.

“With the disappointment of losing out in two finals last season, the league cup being one of them, Liverpool will want to put that right.

“Jurgen Klopp will want to win his first trophy for Liverpool and the league cup is the first one that comes round.”

Klopp guided the Reds to the Europa League final after just seven months in charge of the club but Liverpool were defeated 3-1 by Sevilla.

The European defeat came just three months after Liverpool lost the League Cup final in extra-time against Manchester City at Wembley.

So far this season, the Klopp’s side have been in sublime form in the league, netting 20 goals on their rise to the top of the table, where they currently sit level on points with Arsenal and Manchester City.

Liverpool easily swept past Burton Albion and Derby in the earlier rounds of the cup competition, scoring eight goals and keeping two clean sheets.

They hope to book their place in the quarter-finals with a victory against Tottenham at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
