Noel Whelan has revealed that he is very encouraged Marcelo Bielsa jetted out to Middle East this week to join Andrea Radrizzani in top-level talks.
French publication L’Equipe claim that Paris Saint-Germain owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi held negotiations with Radrizzani in Doha about buying a stake in the Yorkshire giants.
Bielsa joined the discussions with the Qatari owner of PSG and it is believed some of these were focused on the possibility of Leeds having first refusal on the French club’s best youngsters.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-United striker Whelan delivered his verdict on the manager’s involvement in the meetings.
“If there is some kind of investment, that is a very promising sign for Marcelo Bielsa,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He wouldn’t be in Doha unless it was to discuss players.
“That is encouraging for Leeds and everyone connected with the club. PSG should have some really exciting young players, and others surplus to requirements, who we can sign on loan.
“Mr Bielsa has an excellent track record in terms of developing players and he needs more quality players for next season. Derby invested well in loan signings last summer and Leeds need to do the same if there isn’t the money there for expensive permanent signings.”
“Realistically, we need five quality signings. Leeds had a very small squad last season and punched above their weight because of the excellence of Mr Bielsa.”
Leeds finished third in last season’s Championship and narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion after being defeated by Derby County in their play-off semi-final.
Radrizzani has said he is expecting a “difficult” summer, with the club expected to focus on loan and free transfer signings.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that a Whites ace is quitting after agreeing a £13,000-a-week contract with a new club.
