Aberdeen open to Dimitar Mitov exit after 2024-25 Scottish Cup heroics

Aberdeen are willing to let last season’s Scottish Cup final hero Dimitar Mitov leave the club this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Bulgaria international, 29, was the hero of last season’s epic Scottish Cup final penalty shoot-out win over Celtic to etch his name in club folklore.

Mitov has flitted in and out of the side since the January arrival of Norwegian goalie Per Kristian Bratveit, and Aberdeen are open to offers for the fans’ favourite in this summer’s transfer window.

Mitov had been Aberdeen’s undisputed first-choice keeper since signing from Scottish Premiership rivals St Johnstone in the summer of 2024.

What is Dimitar Mitov’s current situation at Pittodrie Stadium?

Although Bratveit has been showing signs of breaking into the lineup more regularly, Mitov remains one of the first names on the teamsheet, especially when it comes to the key matches.

He has started three of the Dons’ last four Scottish Premiership matches, keeping clean sheets against Hibernian and Kilmarnock, but that will come as no surprise to the supporters.

The 29-year-old saved penalties from Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston to help the club to its first piece of silverware since the 2013/14 campaign last season.

Mitov’s contract runs until the summer of 2027, however, so surrounding clubs won’t be able to agree a free transfer with the experienced goalkeeper just yet.

Rangers have held previous interest in Aberdeen goalkeeper

During his time at Cambridge United, Football Insider revealed that Rangers were interested in Mitov. However, a move never came to fruition before his free transfer to St Johnstone in the summer of 2023.

The shot-stopper has since accumulated 41 appearances for St Johnstone and 76 appearances for the Dons, where he has captured hearts at the Pittodrie Stadium.

His time in Scotland could soon come to an end, though, and clubs are bound to be keeping tabs on the situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

Signing the goalkeeper will come with a price tag, but given Aberdeen’s openness to his departure and his age, one club might be looking at a bargain for the experienced keeper.
