Agbonlahor: Aston Villa backed to sign John McGinn replacement as record-breaking deal agreed

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Unai Emery may look to sign an upgrade to John McGinn for Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Emery’s two priorities will be addressing the issues at centre-back and in midfield.

Sources told Football Insider last week (27 October) that the club’s owners are set to hand the new manager a “huge” transfer kitty for the January and summer transfer windows next year.

The Telegraph reported on Tuesday (1 November) that the 51-year-old has been handed a four-and-a-half-year deal – the longest for a manager in Aston Villa history.

“I’ve got a funny feeling he’s going to make quite a few changes,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Villa have got good players but I think he’ll look at the players and want to have his own players.

“Every manager does it. The length that Villa went to get him, paying his release clause, he wouldn’t have agreed to come in without money to spend.

“I think he’ll look all around the squad. Diego Carlos will be his sort of player and will have seen a lot of him in La Liga. Kamara, I think he will like as well. Gerrard’s two signings.

“He might look at centre-half and centre-mid.

“Leander Dendoncker has done well and Douglas Luiz has got a new deal but they might not be his sort of players. McGinn, Jacob Ramsey too. You don’t know what he’s thinking.

“He might like Leon Bailey and want to bring in another winger because we don’t have a lot of wingers.

“Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, he might like them but want to bring in more of a target man number nine who can hold the ball up and win headers.

“It’s really difficult to know what he’s feeling.”
