Agbonlahor: Benitez will be devastated after confirmed Everton news

The return of full stadiums is bad news for new Everton manager Rafael Benitez, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed Goodison Park will turn “toxic” if the Spaniard does not hit the ground running.

Former Liverpool boss Benitez was unveiled as the club’s new boss last week and has penned a three-year deal.

The government confirmed yesterday (5 July) that sports stadiums will return to full capacity on 19 July – in time for the new Premier League season.

Asked whether Benitez can lead Everton to a top-six challenge, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “No, no, no, there’s no chance.

“I played so many times at Goodison Park and if I was Benitez I’d have been hoping there was no crowds coming back!

“I remember playing them when they had David Moyes and they loved him. But when we scored and were winning a game they would turn on him. So never mind a manager who the other month was posting on his Instagram a throwback to winning the Champions League with Liverpool and how much it meant to him.

“I just don’t see it happening. Every game that Everton lose, especially at home, is going to be very toxic. They’re going to be very unforgiving.

“The only way that works is if they have a start like they did last season. Then I think they’ll get behind him.

“If they struggle from the start then it’s going to be a long, long season for him.”

In other news, Everton could be set to seal a “big coup” after a journalist’s update on a 25-year-old.
