Celtic should hand Charlie Wyke a "chance" to shine in the Scottish Premiership, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed the striker's League One record shows he is worth signing on a free transfer reveal.

Wyke's Sunderland contract is set to expire at the end of the month and the club confirmed on their retained list they remain in negotiations over a new deal.

Sunderland

Mark Wilson told the Celtic Huddle podcast on April 27 that the 28-year-old is on a list of potential transfer targets for the club.

As well as finding the net 25 times in the league, the 28-year-old ended the season with 30 goals in 58 games across all competitions.

Sunderland legend and European golden shoe winner Kevin Phillips told Football Insider he had enjoyed an "amazing" campaign at the Stadium of Light.

Asked whether he could repeat that form in for the Hoops, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He could do.

“It’s worth giving him a chance.

“If he can do that in League One then I reckon it’s worth giving him a chance.

“They need a bit of a change there so it’s worth giving him a chance.”

Wyke's displays as Sunderland reached the play-offs also earned him a place in the PFA Team of the season alongside Aiden McGeady.

A graduate of the Middlesbrough academy, he has never played above League One.
