Agbonlahor cites Joelinton after news on Everton agreeing landmark deal

Gabby Agbonlahor has heaped praise on Alex Iwobi for his performances in midfield for Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker compared Iwobi’s resurgence to Joelinton at Newcastle United.

Iwobi has not missed a minute of action this season and has three assists in seven games across all competitions.

The 26-year-old is now seemingly undroppable for Frank Lampard but has entered the final two years of his contract.

The Athletic reported earlier this week (18 September) that Everton have opened preliminary talks with Iwobi over a new deal and they are set to ramp up over the coming weeks.

Lampard has already confirmed they are in negotiations with Anthony Gordon over extending his terms while it is also claimed they want to secure Jordan Pickford’s future.

The goalkeeper, like Iwobi, is under contract until the summer of 2024 while Gordon has a further 12 months to run on his current terms.

“Sometimes positions make the player,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Look at Joelinton, he looks better in midfield and now Iwobi does.

“Maybe the wing didn’t suit him as much. In midfield, he’s got the energy, he’s good at dribbling.

“It’s credit to Lampard for finding the right position for him. He’s a talented player and he showed that at Arsenal.”

Iwobi moved to Goodison Park from Arsenal for a £34million fee in the summer of 2019.

He has scored seven goals and registered 10 assists in 105 games across all competitions for the Toffees.

In other news, an Everton star signed for big money has opened talks to join a new club by 4 October.
