Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins to break his Premier League goalscoring record for the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the legendary former Villa forward tipped the 25-year-old to reach double figures this season after he ended his run of 10 games without a goal against Newcastle United on Saturday.

It brings the Englishman’s tally to seven for the season after he found the net six times in his first seven Premier League games – including a hat-trick against Liverpool.

Agbonlahor scored a club record 74 Premier League goals for Villa but he fully expects the £28million summer signing from Brentford to surpass his tally.

He told Football Insider“That goal has been coming.

“His performances have been outstanding and sometimes as a striker you can go through little runs without scoring but he always looks dangerous, always creating chances, always working hard for the team.

“I’m really happy for him to score and I think definitely that he will continue to score and reach double figures this season.

“I 100 per cent expect him to break my record, I can just tell he is the sort of player who will score goals for a lot of years to come at Aston Villa. It’s good for the team as well.

“He’s played every single minute of every single match and he looks like the fittest player in the team and he doesn’t look like he needs a rest.

“It’s only a good thing for Aston Villa it will mean they don’t have to bring in a striker in the transfer window.”

Manager Dean Smith said before their trip to Burnley: “I’ve said it before that his work ethic has endeared him to all staff members and players here. Nobody was putting any pressure on him apart from himself.”

In other news, Danny Mills has told Aston Villa to look at what Daniel Levy has done after a huge transfer development.
