Agbonlahor hails Bowen as a 'great player' after update on Liverpool signing him from West Ham

Jarrod Bowen is a “great player” but may not be able to cope with a step up to Liverpool, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward suggested he may buckle under the pressure of the Anfield crowd.

The Athletic‘s James Pearce reported on 21 July Bowen is on Liverpool’s radar as they want to add more firepower to their squad.

The West Ham winger scored eight goals and provided five assists in 38 Premier League appearances last season.

It is claimed Liverpool will only formalise their interest if they can offload fringe players like Xherdan Shaqiri.

They see Bowen as a player with a high ceiling who could reach his potential at Anfield.

But Agbonlahor has claimed he could crumble under the weight of expectation in Merseyside.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I do like him as a player but that’s a big step up with big expectations.

“That Anfield crowd is a big expectation, fighting with [Mohamed] Salah and [Sadio] Mane for a place would be really hard as well.

“I don’t see that happening, to be honest. West Ham really like him, so they’re going to expect a lot of money for him which Liverpool won’t pay for a player of his talent.

“He’s a great player but I’m not sure he’s got that level for Liverpool.”

Bowen moved to West Ham for an initial £18million fee from Hull City in January 2020.

The 24-year-old has scored nine goals and provided 10 assists in 53 games across all competitions for the Hammers.
