Agbonlahor hails 'brilliant late move' from Tottenham that is shattering for Nuno untouchable

Matt Doherty faces an uncertain future after Tottenham confirmed the “brilliant late” signing of Emerson Royal, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed Nuno Espirito Santo may not trust long-time favourite Doherty even though he was a virtual untouchable at Wolves.

Nuno now has three right-backs to choose from after Royal completed a £25.7million move from Royal.

Tottenham also confirmed yesterday (31 August) Serge Aurier has left the club by mutual consent.

Tanganga has started all three of Spurs’ Premier League games this season.

Football Insider revealed on 16 August Nuno had blocked the academy graduate leaving the club on loan in the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Doherty’s has started both of Tottenham’s Europa Conference League games this term.

Asked why Spurs felt they needed to bolster their defensive ranks on deadline day, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “The thing is, last season, Tanganga was not consistent.

“I reckon he’s looked at it and thought ‘I want two solid right-backs, Tanganga and the new guy.

“Doherty hasn’t played much. He let him go when he was at Wolves. That shows he probably wasn’t keen on his defending. Aurier was not wanted.

“It makes sense. It’s a big position they need to fill, and Emerson is a brilliant late move. Look at Arsenal, they need to fill that position.”

Doherty moved to Spurs from Wolves in a £15million deal last August but had a mixed first season in north London.

The Republic of Ireland international, 29, managed 29 appearances across all competitions, including 13 Premier League starts.

In other news, Tottenham dealmakers have been hailed for a “brilliant” late deal as a “very scary” situation is exploited.
