Agbonlahor issues five-word verdict on Rangers appointing Sean Dyche amid 'friend's' claim

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Sean Dyche would not suit the Rangers job.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed that Dyche should not get the job just because of his pre-existing relationship with Ross Wilson.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under huge pressure at Ibrox after his side slipped to nine points behind league leaders Celtic in their final game before the World Cup break.

He also oversaw the worst Champions League group campaign in history as the Gers ended with a goal difference of minus-20 after their six Group A games.

Sources told Football Insider earlier this week (14 November) that Rangers are weighing up whether to sack Van Bronckhorst as his job hangs by a thread.

An Ibrox source updated to Football Insider on Friday that discussions are still taking place behind the scenes over the manager’s position.

Dyche told talkSPORT, via the Scotsman, earlier this month (10 November) that he worked with Wilson at Watford and he would love to be invited to an Old Firm derby game.

Asked whether he thought the 51-year-old could end up in the Ibrox hot seat, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think so, no.

“Just because you know the chief executive or the sporting director that doesn’t mean you should get the job.

“They need to put friends aside and look worldwide to get the best person for the job. Not a friend.

“I don’t think Sean Dyche would suit that job, to be honest.”

Dyche has been out of work since leaving Burnley in April 2022.

He spent almost 10 years in charge of the Clarets and guided them to two promotions to the Premier League.
