Agbonlahor: My sources have 'told me' Celtic manager chase latest and real reason Howe walked away

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Eddie Howe’s decision to reject the Celtic job after he was unable to secure his preferred backroom staff.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted Howe’s thinking makes sense as he had to give himself the best opportunity to overcome Rangers.

Celtic released a statement last week confirming Howe will not take the vacant position because of “reasons outwith both his and Celtic’s control”.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider they have now turned their attentions to Ange Postecoglou who has asked for permission to quit Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos and make the switch.

“Eddie Howe is not going to come into a club now and bring in certain people and certain members of staff or a sporting director,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“That’s how Celtic do it, I’ve been told by people in the game and who know how Celtic work that they like to keep control of most things and not let managers dictate and change things.

“That’s why Eddie Howe’s not gone there and I’m sure other managers will feel the same.

“It would have been discussed early on and maybe they were trying to change his mind. But he was probably being stubborn about it and said ‘You know what, unless you’re going to let me bring in certain members of my own staff I’m not going to do it.’

“And that makes sense because Celtic have to change because they’re so far behind Rangers. There’s no point going into the club and not being given the right tools. I don’t blame Eddie Howe. He deserves a chance at a club with the right budget and the right people.”

In other news, this is what an ex-manager’s “sources in Australia” have told him about Ange Postecoglou.
