Agbonlahor: Rangers told to offer three blockbuster new contracts 'within next week' after key update

Rangers should offer James Tavernier, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos new long-term contracts “within the next week”, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker warned the trio will demand bigger wages if they impress in the latter stages of the Europa League.

This site understands the Ibrox giants are waiting until the end of the season to offer new deals to their historic title winners.

They had put any negotiations on hold until the title was secured but now the focus is on their Europa League Round of 16 tie with Slavia Prague.

But Agbonlahor has warned the end of the season could be too late.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “These players could perform even better in the Europa League and their wage demands might increase.

“If I’m Rangers now, I’m trying to tie down my biggest players to contracts within the next week.

“If Rangers can play like they have been they can go to the latter stages of the Europa League and the players will be looking at it and thinking ‘Ok, maybe we can get wages like the Premier League boys in England.’

“It’s a good chance for Steven Gerrard to sit down with the board and say ‘Can I tie down Tavernier? Can I tie down Kent? Can I tie down Morelos?’

“The team that has won this title they have to keep together, they can’t afford to lose too many of them because you’re losing the initiative. They need to build on this squad, give the players that have done really well for him new contracts.”

Tavernier‘s current deal expires at the end of next season while Morelos and Kent are tied down until the summer of 2023.

In other news, Danny Mills has tipped Rangers to dominate Celtic for “three, four years” as they approach a 43-year-old to potentially be their new manager.
