Agbonlahor salutes Defoe after 'perfect' Rangers news confirmed

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Jermain Defoe will make a “perfect coach” at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa forward insisted his old England teammate knows everything you need to know about how to be a top-level striker.

The Ibrox outfit confirmed last week (8 June) that Defoe has signed a new one-year deal that will see him take on a player-coach role.

Football Insider first learned in February that the 38-year-old would likely only stay at the club if he moved into a coaching role.

Asked whether he thought Defoe would make a good coach, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent.

“I thought before it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what happened.

“It’s just what they can offer, he’s got the chance to play Champions League football, he’s got the chance to join the coaching staff and maybe help the strikers.

“It’s just perfect all round and I’m happy for him.

“I think he’ll make a great coach, he’s got so much to offer. When to shoot, how to move your body, movement in behind, first touch, control. He’s got everything.

“To bring that to other players, younger players. He’s just the perfect coach to join Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff.”

Defoe found the net seven times and provided two assists in 20 games, including just five starts, across all competitions last season.

He scored twice in the final three games of the campaign, including his first goal against Celtic.

In other news, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Wolves are racing to sign Rangers star amid a development.
