Agbonlahor salutes 'outstanding' Aston Villa star Mings after emotional reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has heaped praise on Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings after he opened up about his struggles with his mental health.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the legendary former Villa forward admitted he was confused England fans did not have faith in Mings ahead of the European Championship.

The Villa defender told the Sun on 2 August his mental health “plummeted” ahead of the Euros because “95 per cent of the country” doubted him.

Mings silenced his critics with strong displays in England’s opening two games as he helped his country keep two clean sheets.

“It’s refreshing and the way forward,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Players should come out and say if they’re having a tough time because it can help other players talk about their problems.

“I totally rate Tyrone Mings for it. For me, going towards the Euros I was confused that people weren’t having him or his ability.

“He was part of an Aston Villa defence that had an amazing season with double figures of clean sheets. I knew he would have a good tournament. He was unlucky to lose his place because he was outstanding in the games before Harry Maguire came back in.

“It just shows that even if you’re a great player you can still have those doubts when you’ve got the public who aren’t into the way you play.

“He deserves a lot of credit. He dug in, put in some outstanding performances even though he had those problems with his mental health.

“Credit to him for the stuff with Priti Patel as well. She’s a woman that needs a lot of people to express their feelings to her. She had been against what a lot of people were for. It’s good that players are speaking out.

“I fully rate Tyrone Mings and I hope this helps other people open up because it should not be an issue.”
